Mutu signed for Chelsea from Italian Serie A club Parma in 2003. He signed for the Blues at the age of 24 after netting 22 times in 36 matches for Parma. Chelsea paid £19m to secure his transfer from the Italian team and he went on to score on his debut for the club.

Adrian Mutu was on target as Chelsea beat the Foxes. He was the recipient of the winning goal. The Romanian player went on to score four times in his first three games for the Blues.

Mutu told Italian media portal Corrieredello Sport that he could have won a Ballon d’Or at some point in his career before adding that he doesn’t want to think too much about his inability to win the award despite his immense talent.

The start of his Chelsea career was a good one as he thrived under the guidance of then manager Claudio Ranieri but the goals soon dried up as he struggled to consistently produce the goods in the Premier League. His Chelsea career went from bad to worse with the appointment of Jose Mourinho, the self-acclaimed Special One.

Mutu and Mourinho soon clashed over national team duty and his lack of playing time at the club. The Romanian had his time at Chelsea pre-occupied with off-field issues including the doping allegation that derailed his career. He returned a negative result for the first drug test conducted by the West London club. Two months later, his drug test returned positive as conducted by anti-doping authorities.

Chelsea cut all ties with Mutu on the back of testing positive after the second drug test and  the situation ended in a messy court battle as the player sought millions in compensation. He would later play for Juventus and Fiorentina in the Italian Serie A.
